Summary
The Black Watch is the oldest surviving Scottish Regiment in the British Army. The regiment was raised on request of King George II in 1725 as a way to ‘watch over’ and police the Highlands, and comprises of the old 73rd and 42nd Highlanders. Having had a continuous history for almost three hundred years, the regiment has a considerable amount of loyalty in the recruiting area and soldiers are still to this day issued with a distinctive Red Hackle (which was first issued in 1795).

The Black Watch has been involved in many famous battles over the years including Culloden, the Boer War, the American Revolutionary War, Waterloo, both World Wars and the Iraq War.
